Valorngard Gameplay

The basics are covered in this short video.

  •   Set up your castle (black dot cards).
  •   Shuffle other cards into 2 piles (red dot and blue dot).
  •   Draw 8 cards into your hand.
  •   Play 1 card per turn, replacing it from either pile.
  •   Create forces and battle!
  •   Strategise with Enchanted Objects, Battle Tactics & more.
  •   Destroy your oppenent's Castle Keep to claim victory!

HOW TO PLAY

How to Play: Start your adventure by arranging your fortifications and placing your hidden structures behind them. As the game progresses, every turn is an opportunity: deploy individual troops or combine them with powerful siege weapons to form forces. On the battlefield, you'll face decisions at every corner. Engage with enemy troops in tense face-offs, or aim to dismantle their fortifications. Successfully breaching a fortification not only reveals the structure behind but also shifts the dynamics of the game, offering new strategic choices. Defend your structures, or press the attack against your opponent's weak points. Your strategies, combined with the cards you draw, will determine your success. The endgame? Penetrate deep into enemy territory, target, and destroy the pivotal castle structure — the keep. Achieve this, and victory is yours!

Game setup

The Battlefield explained

Setting Up the Battlefield: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Lay Your Foundations: Begin by placing your fortification cards (black dot). This typically includes 4 walls, 2 guard towers, and 1 gatehouse. For a swifter game, you can opt to remove 2 walls.
  2. Construct the Castle: Directly behind the front row of fortifications, arrange 2 rows of face-down structure cards (black dot). Make sure to include the pivotal castle keep in this setup. For a shorter game, simply use 1 row of structures.
  3. Deck Division: Divide your game deck into two distinct piles: one containing troops, seige weapons and other characters (blue dot) and the remaining bonus and event cards (red dot). Shuffle each pile separately.
  4. Prepare the Reserves: From your now-shuffled decks, remove the top 3 cards from each without peeking, setting them aside – they won't be part of this game. This adds uncertainty and makes each game different.
  5. Draw Your Forces: Pull 8 cards into your starting hand. You can choose from either pile or both based on your initial strategy.
  6. Determine First Move: Roll a dice. The player with the highest roll takes the first turn.
  7. Position for Battle: You're all set! With your fortifications in place and your hand ready, prepare to engage in a battle of strategy and wits.
  8. Placing cards: One by one, place cards onto the battlefield (or on structures for defensive strategies) and when you are ready, declare an attack, and roll the dice. May the dots always be kind.

The key to victory is breaching your opponent's defences and ultimately destroying their castle keep. Every move counts! Every decision matters! Happy battling!

face-down structure cards explained

In the ever-evolving landscape of our game, the element of surprise is pivotal. The placement of structure cards face down serves several strategic and thematic purposes:

  • Element of Surprise: Keeping structure cards face down introduces an unpredictable element into the game. This means players must continually adapt their strategy based on the unfolding game board.

  • Strategic Depth: Not knowing the exact nature of your opponent's structures forces you to consider multiple potential scenarios and outcomes. Should you commit to an aggressive strategy, or should you play cautiously? The hidden information keeps players on their toes.

  • Immersive Experience: Thematically, the face-down placement mirrors the fog of war often experienced in real-life battles. Armies rarely had complete information about enemy fortifications, leading to tense moments of revelation.

  • Balancing Mechanism: Face-down structures can level the playing field. A player who may feel they have a disadvantage can rely on the element of surprise to turn the tide.

  • Encourages Exploration: With hidden structures, players are incentivized to explore, probe, and test their opponent’s defenses, leading to varied and engaging gameplay sessions.
